Description
Lightning striking above the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale Arizona. During July and August you can watch nightly shows of lightning striking around these mountains and desert. The McDowells share borders with the cities of Fountain Hills, Scottsdale, and Maricopa County. Light travels faster than sound and that's why a lightning strike can be seen first and then the thunder can be heard. It is because of this speed difference between light and sound that it is actually possible to calculate the distance of storm. A bolt of lightning contains enough energy to toast 160,000 pieces of bread. About 24,000 people are killed by lightning strikes around the world each year. In 1939, 835 sheep were killed by a single lightning strike in Utah. There will be a 50% increase in lightning strikes by 2100 if global warming continues, according to a scientific report.
